DECA Competition

VG-DECAArizona State Career and Development Conference20210227 (2)

Each year, Vista Grande High School’s DECA strives to be an award-winning chapter that upholds all DECA values through their dedication to the organization, commitment to the education of their members, desire to maintain a competitive spirit, and appreciation shown to their community. They have once again shown not only themselves, but the entire state of Arizona what it means to be a Vista Grande DECA member.

Vista Grande DECA recently competed in the Arizona State Career and Development Conference. This conference is normally held at the Arizona Grand Resort each year. Due to the pandemic, all large DECA events are virtual this school year. While this can add special challenges for the students, they are still thriving and striving! There were seven (7) students who competed in five (5) different events during the virtual event this year: [Juniors] Jose Granados, Aniqa Khan, Justyce Martinez, and Mia Mooring, and [Freshmen] Damian Araiza, Aceton McGuire, and Paul Sanchez. The skills they learned to just participate in the event will serve them well both at school and in their future careers.

It has been a very busy year for VG DECA. They have continued to provide solid programming as evidenced by the chapter awards granted at the event. They are an Elite Chapter who submitted a solid Plan of Leadership with varied events scheduled throughout the school year that focused on career development in marketing. They participated in Virtual Officer Training, Western Region Leadership Conference, and completed community service projects throughout the year. They are an Affiliated Chapter and a Century Chapter (with a minimum of 100 members). They won seats at the International Career Development Conference (ICDC) to be held in April with the Community Service and DECA Membership Campaigns.

In February, their newest competitors showed they have what it takes to be successful and are continuing to grow in their skills both in the classroom and during role play presentations. They are working on a plan for their Freshmen group to continue to grow in leadership skills both inside their chapter and with Arizona DECA. They will be invited to apply for the opportunity to attend the International Career Development Conference (ICDC) Academy.

Their more experienced competitors all showed growth of at least 15% in both test scores and role play scores. Two competitors placed in the top five (5) in the state: Jose Granados placed 3rd in Food Marketing and Aniaqa Khan placed 4th in Hotel and Lodging Management. These rankings have earned Jose and Aniqa competition slots at ICDC. We wish them luck on their journey toward DECA Glass!
